Experimental drug reduces autistic signs in lab mice | The Town Talk | thetowntalk.com: An experimental drug reduced two signature characteristics of autism -- repetitive behavior and abnormal social interactions -- in laboratory mice, new research finds.
The drug, GRN-529, targets glutamate, a major neurotransmitter found throughout the brain that's involved with activating neurons, or brain cells. Researchers believe the compound works through a specific glutamate receptor (mGluR5) and decreases glutamate activity.

Autism disorder may have link to smoking - UPI.com: Children of women who smoked during pregnancy were more likely to have high-functioning autism, such as Asperger's Disorder, U.S. researchers say.
Lead author Amy Kalkbrenner, assistant professor in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health, said those with Asperger's Disorder display significant difficulties in social interaction and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests, but they have linguistic ability.
